Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is a painful skin condition characterized by a rash and mild to severe pain. It can affect anyone who has been exposed to the Chicken Pox Virus at any time in their life. Shingles is the 'reactivation' of the 'chicken pox' virus, which is a member of the Herpes Family of viruses. Older adults are more susceptible to Shingles, and the rash may persist up to a month. Unfortunately, 10-20% of people who are afflicted with Shingles progress to a condition called Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN), which is a continuation of the pain and skin sensitivity of Shingles, yet lasts long after the rash has healed.
Although Western Medicine does not consider there to be a 'cure' for Shingles or PHN, is you are a sufferer you may be experiencing some relief with pharmaceutical (drug) therapy. If your relief is not complete, we encourage you to explore the treatment of these diseases using traditional eastern acupuncture techniques, which have shown to be helpful either alone, or as an adjunct to your pharmaceutical therapy.
