Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative disorder that slowly robs people of their central vision. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the US, affecting over 13 million people in the US and 30 million people worldwide. It is estimated that 200,000 people are diagnosed with macular degeneration each year in the United States.

There are 2 types of AMD: the 'dry type' and the 'wet type'. Currently there are no widely accepted treatments to stop the progression of either the 'dry' or 'wet' AMD, although many promising studies are currently underway throughout the world.

Here at the East West Medical Center P.A., we use classic Chinese acupuncture points for the treatment of Macular Degeneration. We have initiated the process of applying for a grant from the National Institute of Health to further study the "why" of the success of this treatment of macular degeneration. A researcher from Germany has already documented increased retinal artery blood flow with classic Chinese points.
